“Use Your Phone Wisely”: Archbishop Palmer-Buckle Urges Catholics to Verify Their Faith Online
In a powerful reflection on faith and digital responsibility, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, has urged Catholics especially young people to use digital tools wisely and responsibly in deepening their understanding of the Catholic faith.
Speaking during his Archbishop’s Visitation at St. Matthew Catholic Church, under the theme “Becoming a Synodal Church,” the Archbishop cautioned against ignorance of Church teachings in an age where information is readily available.
“Don’t use a cellphone and say you don’t know the Catholic Church,” the Archbishop stressed.
Archbishop Palmer-Buckle emphasized that in today’s digital world, Catholics have no excuse for confusion about Church teachings if they make good use of verified Catholic platforms online. He encouraged the faithful to: Search for authentic Catholic websites, Ask questions about their faith and Learn from credible Church sources rather than misinformation.
He specifically warned against blindly accepting everything seen on social media and the internet as truth.
“Never believe everything you see on the net as the true way. Always verify from notable Catholic platforms,” he advised.
While acknowledging the dangers of digital misuse, the Archbishop reminded the faithful that technology itself is not evil, but rather a tool meant for good when used rightly.
He called on Catholics to avoid wasting precious time on content that does not glorify God or build their spiritual lives.
> “The phone is for our good. Let us stop wasting time watching and listening to things that do not bring glory to our Father in heaven,” he added.
In line with the Synodal call to participation, communion, and mission, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle challenged Catholics to become more intentional about their faith formation—both offline and online.
He encouraged believers to:
Seek truth with discernment
Grow in faith through trusted Catholic media
Become responsible digital witnesses of Christ
The Archbishop’s message serves as a timely reminder that in an era of endless information, discernment is a Christian duty. Digital tools should draw believers closer to God, not further into confusion.
As Catholics navigate the online world, the call remains clear: verify, learn, ask questions, and use technology to glorify God.
